The Power Of Democracy In America

“Blind man breakin’ out of a trance
Puts both his hands in the pockets of chance
Hopin’ to find one circumstance
Of dignity”
                                                Bob Dylan

After hearing the news and reading the public letter written by Donald Trump’s communication strategist, Stephanie Cegielski, who quit last week because she couldn’t take any more of the Huge Ego of the candidate, I’m starting to see a pattern emerge.…

In any true democracy the extreme right wing point of view is one that always ends up in a minority position. If it doesn’t, that country ceases to be a democracy. And I honestly don’t believe America has any intention of doing that to itself. Their love of freedom is too great.

I honestly believe that there are a lot of people in America who are totally sick of what’s going on in their country and will show their discontent with their vote.

These are people who know that things are improving thanks to the Herculean efforts of Barack Obama and they also know that the popularity of extremists, like Trump and Cruz, is limited, despite that fact that the right wing controlled media makes them seem like a big deal.

In today’s world, it’s possible to have your true importance magnified to a greater degree than ever though the clever use of on and offline media. But the ridiculousness of those extreme viewpoints is also something that is magnified.

So if you’re out there making silly statements like you’re going to build a wall to keep out Mexicans. Or that all Muslims should be banned from entering your country because they are terrorists or, or, or…. the ignorance that spawns those points of view is sharing time with the actual statements. And people are judging them accordingly.

And if you don’t think that the majority of sane people in America don’t see that for what it is, then you are nothing less than a hopelessly deluded narcissist.

Some people in America need to start embracing the reality that the world has changed. That their country is a melting pot and that the cushy manufacturing jobs are not coming back en mass, because no president has the power to do that.

Not even Trump with his self-proclaimed prodigious, and pretty much unsubstantiated deal- making prowess.

Yes there is a lot of discontent in America, but there is still a lot of opportunity. America is already making itself great again. They don’t need a right wing egomaniac to do it for them.

Americans are making the transition on their own. Coming up with new ideas that will add immeasurably to the world we live in. Building businesses based on American innovation and ingenuity. Stepping up and not being afraid of the big bad psychotic right wing corporations that are bent on sterilizing the universe.

And why? Because America, despite what you see on CNN and Fox News, is still a democracy.

And for better or worse, still one of the better democracies around.

I’m not an American, but I grew up in a border town and have an affinity for Americans. They are hardworking, god fearing and freedom loving people on the whole.

And it is that whole that will be heard from, not the minority of ignorant, disgruntled, racist fanatics.

Will the results be perfect? Probably not. But for better or worse, America will remain a democracy. Americans have fought too hard and sacrificed too much not to keep it that way.

So get your fill of the Donald Trump/Ted Cruz cartoon show, before it gets canceled.

  1. I heartily hope you are correct Jim. I was speaking this morning with a chap who was a former ‘cultural advisor’ to the U.S. Military. Read whatever you want into the job title but he worked in intelligence with specific reference to Kurdistan & Turkey. This is a man with good insight into the current state of affairs in Syria, Iran, Iraq et al and a profound understanding of the region’s history of conflict (centuries of it in fact). Very surprising to me he was a real Trump fan. As he explained it his enthusiasm was simply a result of enormous frustration with the traditional approaches to international affairs in D.C. overwhelmingly characterized by a primary focus on the financial well-being of American interests. To say I was gobsmacked would be to completely misrepresent the extent of my confusion. Donald Drumpf is a narcissistic demagogue driven by self-interest. How he continues to resonate with many even otherwise reasonable, intelligent and rational people just boggles my mind.

    1. Thanks Don. You know it’s possible that some of Trumps statements would resonate with military and diplomatic people. My brother and I were discussing that same thing on the weekend. But the problem is that the job entails a whole lot of skills that Trump doesn’t have. Plus, the huge downside of his ego.
